Apsinuodijama nuodingosiomis medžiagomis kvėpuojant, pro odą, žaizdas ir virškinimo traktą. Visais atvejais nuodingosios medžiagos, patekusios į kraują, išnešiojamos po visus organus ir audinius, dažniausiai nuodijamas visas organizmas (bendrasis apnuodijimas). Liesdamosis su odos paviršiumi, viršutinių kvėpavimo takų ir akių gleivine, nuodingosios medžiagos žaloja odą, dirgina kvėpavimo organus, silpnina regėjimą (vietinis apnuodijimas). Ilgą laiką veikdamos nedidelėmis dozėmis, nuodingosios medžiagos sukelia vėžį, išsigimimus, didina organizmo alergiškumą, keičia paveldimumą, veikia lytines liaukas, gemalą ir kt. atitikmenys: angl. toxic properties rus. токсические свойства
